Internet Terms & Technology
What is latency, and why does it matter?
Latency (or ping) measures how quickly your internet sends a request and gets a response. Even with high download speeds, high latency can make your connection feel sluggish.

Xiber’s cleaner, more direct network keeps latency low (often just a few milliseconds) so everything feels faster, smoother, and more responsive.
What is the difference between fixed wireless, fiber, and broadband internet?
These are just different ways your internet travels to reach you:

  • Fiber: Super-thin glass lines that send data as light...Extremely fast.
  • Fixed Wireless: A secure wireless link from nearby towers to your building. Fast and flexible.
  • Broadband: Traditional internet over cable or phone lines (the type most people are familiar with).
Xiber Advantage: We combine fiber and fixed wireless to give you the fastest, most reliable connection possible for your home or business.

What does bandwidth mean?
Bandwidth is the amount of space your internet has to move data. Think of it like a multi-lane road—the more lanes, the more smoothly traffic flows. Higher bandwidth lets more devices stream, game, work, or browse simultaneously without slowing each other down.
What is symmetrical internet?
Symmetrical internet gives you the same upload and download speeds. Instead of being fast one way and slow the other, both directions move at the same pace. This results in smoother video calls, quicker uploads, cleaner streaming, and better overall performance.
What's the difference between "Mbps" and "Mb/s"?
Internet speed is usually measured in bits per second (Kbps, Mbps, Gbps). Some apps report speeds in bytes per second (Kb/s, Mb/s, Gb/s). Since 8 bits = 1 byte, an 8 Mbps download would appear as 1 MB/s in those apps.

Xiber advertises and reports speeds in Mbps and Gbps, and we’ll use the same terms when supporting you.
What's the difference between a dynamic and a static IP address?
Most residential internet connections use dynamic IP addresses, which change over time. This usually doesn’t affect your service, though some websites might misidentify your location.

Business internet typically uses a static IP, which never changes. This ensures servers and clients can communicate reliably without needing configuration updates for new IP addresses.
My console shows a "Strict NAT". What does that mean?
Xiber residential routers are designed to keep your home network safe and secure. Sometimes this can cause your console (Xbox, PlayStation, or Switch) to show a Strict NAT, which may limit your ability to join or host games with certain players.

An Open NAT can improve matchmaking but is less secure, as it allows more open access to your network.

If your Strict NAT is affecting online gaming, contact Xiber support. Be sure to include your console’s IP address and model so our network team can help adjust your NAT settings and set up port forwarding, if needed.
Internet Speed
How can I test my internet speed?
To get the most accurate results, follow these steps:

  1. Connect your device properly: Preferably via Ethernet (hardwired), then 5 GHz WiFi, and lastly 2.4 GHz WiFi.
  2. Disable VPNs: Disconnect from any VPN services. For iPhone or iPad users, turn off iCloud Private Relay: Settings > [Your Name] > iCloud > Private Relay > Turn Off Private Relay.
  3. Pause other activity: Stop all streaming and downloads (Netflix, Hulu, YouTube, Steam, etc.) on your network.
  4. Run the test: Open a browser and visit speedtest.net. Make sure to select Xiber as your target server, then perform the speed test.

Tip: Wireless speeds may be lower than wired speeds due to distance, interference, and the number of devices connected.

What's the difference between 5gb and 10gb internet?
It comes down to how much speed you need. 10 Gb internet delivers double the power of 5 Gb which is ideal for large households, creators, gamers, or anyone using many devices at once. 5 Gb is already extremely fast, while 10 Gb gives extra headroom for heavy activity and future upgrades.
