What is latency or ping?
We know you have questions.
Because we already read your mind and answered them.
Latency, or ping response time (measured in milliseconds), is the time it takes your request for information to travel to a service provider, like AWS, Microsoft, Netflix, PlayStation, or Zoom, and back to your computer. This is the dirty secret that most internet service providers don’t want you to understand. Even though they claim high speeds like Gigabit, their legacy networks actually cause your web pages, documents, and email to load slowly and your video conferences and streams to break up. Their old school networks are so congested and complex with long-distance connections and old copper wiring (even though they say they are fiber), that their latency averages in the high dozens or even hundreds of milliseconds. Xiber’s superior delivery method for internet service and next-gen network design results in latency in the single digits of milliseconds, nearer to full light-speed.
What is the difference between fixed wireless, fiber, and broadband internet?
Xiber uses the most efficient and fastest pathway to deliver you internet. When called for, Xiber uses lightweight and small-footprint fixed-wireless point-to-point radios between towers and rooftops near or at your business that communicate using parts of the radio frequency (RF) spectrum licensed to us by the FCC. These high-capacity (multi-gigabit capable) radios allow information to travel very near the speed of light with virtually no RF or weather interference. Our network also relies on fiber-optic connections from a data center to the radios, from radios to your network, or sometimes directly to your network from the data center, whichever will result in better service to you. “means very high speeds from 1 gigabit per second (Gbps) to 10 Gbps or beyond, both upload and download.
What's the difference between "Mbps" and "Mb/s"?
Internet speed is best measured in bits per second (Kbps, Mbps, Gbps), while some apps and programs may report speeds as bytes per second (Kb/s, Mb/s, Gb/s). 8 bits = 1 byte, so an 8Mbps download speed would show as 1Mb/s. Xiber advertises and reports speeds at Mbps and Gbps, and will use that term when supporting you.
How can I test my internet speed?
We recommend the following practices for testing your internet speed:

  • Connect your device using the best method available, that being hardwired/Ethernet, 5Ghz wireless, and 2.4Ghz wireless in that order of priority.
  • Disconnect your device from any VPN services. If you are on an iPhone or iPad, make sure to disable iCloud Private Relay through Settings > [Your Name] > iCloud > Private Relay > Turn Off Private Relay
  • Pause all media streaming and downloads in the household, such as Netflix/Hulu, YouTube, and Steam.
  • Open your device's browser and visit https://speedtest.net, making sure to select Xiber as your target server, and perform a speedtest.

Please note that your speeds over wireless may be drastically lower than over a wired connection due to the way wireless speeds drop off over the number of devices connected and over distance/interference.
Is fixed wireless internet secure?
Yes, fixed wireless internet connections employ the same level of encryption and security between endpoints as data sent over wired copper or fiber-optic connections.

What's the difference between a dynamic and a static IP address?
When you live in a residential apartment or home, your ISP-assigned IP address is dynamic, meaning it changes over time. This usually has no effect on your service, but occasionally you might notice certain sites not recognizing you or thinking you are in a different location. Business internet service generally relies on a static IP address that never changes, which enables servers and clients to communicate with each other reliably forever without having to worry about changing configurations to match updated IPs.
My console shows a "Strict NAT". What does that mean?
By default, all Xiber residential routers are set up to provide your household with a safe and secure network. This can cause your console (Xbox, PlayStation, or Switch) to show a closed/Strict NAT, which may limit your ability to join or host games with certain players. An open NAT can allow for a better matchmaking experience but is generally less secure as it will enable more open access to your home network with minimal limitations. If you are having trouble playing online video games with your NAT being strict, contact Xiber support to have our network team adjust your NAT type and port forwarding. When contacting Xiber about your NAT, please include the IP address of your console and the name of its model so we can better assist you.
